Harnessing an Internal Nervous System for Organizational Performance

Feb 28, 2024

In a captivating episode of The High Performance Leader Podcast, I had the pleasure of conversing with Ben Ford, former Royal Marine turned CEO of Mission Control. Our discussion delved into the intriguing concept of creating an internal nervous system within organisations—a topic that Ben, with his unique blend of military and technological expertise, is passionately pioneering.

Integrating Military Precision with Technological Innovation

Ben's journey from the Royal Marines to the forefront of technological innovation is a testament to the power of cross-disciplinary expertise. His military background provided him with a deep understanding of operating in environments filled with complexity and uncertainty, an experience he found lacking in the corporate tech world. This realisation led Ben to the development of Mission Control, a framework designed to centralise organisational information, thus enabling better decision-making and a comprehensive understanding of operational dynamics.

The Essence of an Internal Nervous System

The concept of an internal nervous system in a business context, as Ben articulates, is about leveraging the collective sensory and processing capabilities of an organisation to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment effectively. This system connects the various inputs and outputs—ranging from external market signals to internal operational data—filtering and processing them to make informed decisions.

In the military, the efficiency of operations heavily relies on a well-structured command and control system that can rapidly process information and adapt to changing circumstances. One the things we both learned early in our military careers is the need to communicate effectively and efficiently and the importance of others doing the same so you have operational awareness.

Ben's vision is to translate this concept into the corporate sphere, where businesses can benefit from a similar level of agility and situational awareness.

Overcoming Organizational Complexity with Technological Aid

Today's businesses, especially tech companies, face an overwhelming influx of data and a rapid pace of change that traditional management structures struggle to handle. Ben emphasized the necessity of technological aid to manage this complexity. Drawing from his military experience and technological acumen, he advocates for building an organization's internal operating system that can streamline information flow and decision-making processes.

One compelling example Ben shared involved automating mundane tasks to free up valuable human expertise for more strategic endeavours. This not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with creating a more engaging and fulfilling work environment for employees.

Implementing the Internal Nervous System

Ben's approach to implementing an internal nervous system involves a few key steps:

  1. Automation of repetitive tasks using low-code or no-code solutions to optimise operational efficiency.
  2. Centralisation of data to enable real-time analytics and decision-making.
  3. Adoption of agile methodologies, inspired by military principles like the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), to foster a culture of rapid iteration and responsiveness.

The Path Forward

Ben Ford's insights present a compelling case for leaders to rethink how they manage complexity within their organisations. By adopting the concept of an internal nervous system, businesses can achieve a higher level of performance and adaptability, traits that are increasingly crucial in today's fast-paced and uncertain business landscape.

As leaders, it's essential to remain open to cross-disciplinary learnings and to embrace technology not just as a tool for product development but as a core component of organisational strategy. Ben's journey and the success of Mission Control serve as an inspiration for leaders seeking to navigate the complexities of the modern business environment with precision, efficiency, and innovation.
