BOXERS, SNOWBALLS, and FLOATS
May 30, 2023What separates people who are high performers from those who succeed and then slide backward again?
My view is simple - discipline.
High performance comes from the disciplined
repetition of actions - whether it's a good day
or a bad one.
We can all think about that boxer who gets the championship belt and doesn't believe he needs to train as hard anymore because he's a champ - clearly the best right?
And then he gets knocked out in his next fight. Why? Because he stopped doing all the things which made him a winner. The tireless training, the hunger to succeed, the discipline to get up and train when it's cold and raining outside.
Our performance is exactly the same. Once we have set up our goals and the habits which will get us there, we need to stick to them almost religiously in order to pick up momentum.
Imagine your performance like a snowball rolling down a hill. It collects mass and momentum so long as there are snow and a slope. If either stop, the snowball melts with all the gains being undone. Thankfully we might not melt, but the concept of cumulative gain from discipline applies.
At first, it won't seem like much of a difference but after a month, a year, a decade, imagine what the difference would be like between someone who applied these habits versus someone who didn't.
When you're having a bad day, working on high-performance habits will not only give you something to focus on, but they will also give you the achievement you need to inevitably lift your mood. I have seen (and done) it time and time again.
Equally important is sticking with those habits when you are winning at life. They will stop you sliding into bad days like a being a swimmer with a flotation device - it will make you more buoyant and stop you slipping under. It will also help maintain your energy and success drive so you can achieve even greater things.
