If You Keep Doing the Same Things, Will Anything Change?
Nov 18, 2024Ever catch yourself saying, “If I can just get through this week… this month… this quarter, things will calm down”? It’s a familiar refrain for mid-senior managers, caught between the relentless expectations of their boss and the constant needs of their team. You’re managing the endless demands of people, projects, and processes while trying to carve out time for the elusive big-picture work you know you should be doing. But let’s be honest: How often does “just getting through it” actually change anything?
The Never-Ending Cycle
Here’s the reality: The fires will keep flaring up, the urgent will keep trumping the important, and the big goals—the ones that could truly move the needle—will stay buried under another week of back-to-back meetings and overflowing inboxes. Unless you get some support to change things.
I worked recently with a Director of Operations who summed it up perfectly during a strategy session: “I start Monday with all the best intentions of working on my strategic goals, but by lunchtime, I’m firefighting issues my team should have been able to handle.”
He told me about one specific day when he’d planned to outline a roadmap for a critical initiative—something his boss had been asking for. Instead, he spent hours sorting out a miscommunication between two managers, responding to a flood of “urgent” emails, and troubleshooting a last-minute scheduling issue. By the time 5 p.m. rolled around, he realised he hadn’t even opened the file for his roadmap.
It wasn’t laziness. It wasn’t lack of capability. It was the cycle: urgent demands pulling his attention in every direction, leaving no space for the strategic work he knew would make a difference. Sound familiar?
The behaviours that keep most of us stuck
It’s not lack of effort or ambition holding you back. It’s the cycle. We all have patterns that feel productive but ultimately keep us stuck. These are the common ones I see.
- You step in to “fix” things yourself. It’s faster, right? But while you’re firefighting, your team misses the chance to step up—and you lose the time to think strategically.
- You say yes to too much. Every meeting, every project, every “quick request” lands on your plate because saying no feels like letting someone down.
- You postpone the big stuff. You tell yourself you’ll work on that strategic plan once you “clear the deck,” but the deck never clears.
- You wear busyness as a badge of honour. Being the go-to person for everything feels good—until you realize you’re spread so thin, you’re not truly impactful anywhere.
And perhaps the real clincher:
- You don't know what else to do. There is little clarity or support being provided from your boss about what should be happening (after all you're senior enough to figure it out right?) so you simply do what you think is best - nobody has ever helped you navigate this role
These behaviours feel safe because they’re familiar. But the truth is, the same choices will lead to the same frustrations. Another year goes by, and the bold leadership you envisioned gets postponed… again.
Why It Matters
If nothing changes, here’s what you risk:
- Your boss is wondering why you’re not stepping up. They’re looking for strategic leadership, not someone bogged down in the details.
- Your team is disengaged. They see you taking on too much and hesitate to own their roles fully, leaving potential untapped.
- You’re running on fumes. The grind is exhausting, and deep down, you know you can’t keep it up without burning out.
So, here’s the question: If you keep doing what you’re doing, what will next year look like? Will you finally be leading at the level you’re capable of, or will you still be stuck in the weeds, frustrated and wondering what went wrong?
The Breakthrough You Need
Here’s the good news: Change is possible. But it starts with recognising that the current approach isn’t working and committing to something different.
This isn’t about working harder or saying yes to even more—it’s about working smarter, focusing your energy on what matters, and unlocking a new level of leadership impact.
Before the year is out, here’s how you can take action:
- Book a Leadership Breakthrough Strategy Session: This isn’t just a conversation—it’s an hour dedicated to pinpointing what’s holding you back and creating a tailored roadmap to shift gears. I guarantee you’ll walk away knowing exactly where to focus your efforts to break the cycle and lead with complete clarity.
- Join the Global Leadership Mastermind (GLM): Imagine having a community of leaders who truly get it—leaders facing the same challenges and ready to grow. We'll be launching this in January 2025 and in just 6 weeks, you’ll develop the tools, frameworks, and mindset to move from firefighting to high-impact leadership. You’ll learn how to delegate effectively, reclaim your time for strategic thinking, and drive results that make your boss, your team, and yourself proud.
What’s Next?
You have a choice: Keep doing what you’re doing and hope things magically change—or take the first step toward leading differently.
If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and start leading at the level you know you’re capable of, let’s talk.
